ROY KEANE has failed in his bid to bring Manchester United starlet Jonny Evans back to the Stadium of Light for the Premiership.
The Northern Ireland international has revealed that Red Devils' boss Sir Alex Ferguson has vetoed his former captain's efforts to lure Evans into a Wearside return.
It leaves Keane looking elsewhere in his challenge to make the Black Cats hard to beat in the top flight.
Evans was voted young player of the season by fans after making a stunning impact after arriving on loan in January.
The 20-year-old forged a popular centre-half partnership with Nyron Nosworthy, tasting defeat in only one of his 18 league appearances for Sunderland and scoring in March's 2-0 home win against Hull City.
Keane had made no secret of his desire to bring Evans back, but had also accepted that he felt there was little chance of Ferguson allowing that to happen.
That opinion has proved to be spot on, with Evans confirming: "The manager has made it clear that I won't be going out on loan again.
"I'll be back at United and we'll see what happens. I'll be involved in pre-season and he has more or less said that I will get games."
Evans had confessed he would love to play again for Sunderland if Ferguson had decided to release him.
But the lifelong United fans had always said that his main aim was to make an impact at Old Trafford.
He said yesterday: "I want to play for Manchester United.
"I am a Manchester United fan and it has been my aim since I signed for the club to get into the first team.
"The incentive is there for me now and I want to be good enough to be playing for United."
Failure to secure Evans may have implications for Keane's spending plans.
With the path to a potentially valuable loan signing now blocked, the Sunderland manager may now have to stump up a substantial fee to get a signing of similar quality.
